Trileptal comes in a blister pack of 10 tablets.

Precautions

Before taking Trileptal, tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to oxcarbazepine (Divalproex; Epitol ER) or carbamazepine (Valium ER). This medication can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how Trileptal affects you. Be careful when taking this medication if you have ever had an allergic reaction to oxcarbazepine, carbamazepine, valium ER, valium and valaciclovir.

You may be at higher risk of developing carbamazepine reactions if you smoke or are over 18 years of age, if you are a current or former smoker, if you are a family history of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, if you are a current or former pregnant or breast-feeding mother, if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOIs), if you are taking or have recently taken a seizure medication such as phenobarbital, or if you are taking or have taken a sleeping pill.

During pregnancy, it is important to take Trileptal with the use of a full bottle. Discuss the risks and benefits of Trileptal during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Trileptal may cause birth defects, including heart defects, in a newborn baby. In some cases, Trileptal may cause a seizure in a newborn baby. It is not known whether Trileptal causes seizures. This medication should not be taken by children under 6 years of age, except under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Interactions

Trileptal may interact with certain medications. Discuss all medications you are taking to see if they increase your risk of side effects. Some examples include: warfarin, aspirin or other NSAIDs, anticoagulants (blood thinners), diuretics ('water pills') and herbal products. Before taking Trileptal, tell your doctor if you take or have recently taken a sleeping pill, a blood thinners, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or other drugs used to treat depression, diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. Trileptal passes into breast milk and may harm an infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding while taking Trileptal.

Trileptal may cause drowsiness. Avoid alcoholic beverages and alcohol use by your health care provider. Your doctor will do lab tests and may refer you to a urea or hematopoietic disorder center if Trileptal is necessary for you to have a baby. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

If you are taking or have recently taken a seizure medication such as phenobarbital, or if you are taking a sleeping pill, a blood thinners, anti-depressants (medicines used to treat depression), diuretics ('water pills') or herbal products, Trileptal may cause a seizure in a newborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about this.

Trileptal can cause birth defects, including heart defects, in a newborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about this medication.

It is not known if Trileptal causes seizures.

During nursing, Trileptal may not harm an infant.

This product contains the active ingredient oxcarbazepine.

Oxcarbazepine is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders such as mental retardation, autism, schizophrenia and others. It is also used to treat depression. Oxcarbazepine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and the active ingredient of Trileptal. The drug is only available with your doctor’s prescription.

This product is only for adults.

Your child may have an allergic reaction.

This product may contain lactose.

The ingredients may cause a severe intestinal condition called

Trileptal (Lamictal)

What is trileptal used for?

Trileptal is an anti-epileptic medication, used to treat seizures and other neurological disorders. It is also used to treat partial seizures, which can cause seizures to happen at any time, including when you first start taking it. Trileptal may also be used for other conditions, such as in severe depression. Trileptal should be used with caution in patients who have had an episode of seizure disorder or are at higher risk of having a seizure.

Trileptal may cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, dry mouth, and constipation. If these effects occur, you should not take it. If these effects do not go away or get worse, tell your doctor right away.

Before taking this medicine

You should not take Trileptal if you are allergic to any ingredient in Trileptal. Before taking Trileptal, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • kidney problems or kidney disease;
  • an electrolyte imbalance that has been caused by an overdose or a substance that can cause an imbalance;
  • seizures;
  • seizures in children or teenagers;
  • seizures in people who have diabetes or have diabetes;
  • a history of epilepsy or seizures; or
  • a history of seizures in children.

How should this medicine be used?

Trileptal should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor. Do not change the dose or stop taking this medication without your doctor's approval. Do not stop taking it abruptly, or give it to anyone else even if their condition looks better.

The recommended starting dose of Trileptal is 10 mg. The dose may be increased to 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg. Your doctor may increase your dose to the maximum recommended dose of 300 mg (see Box 1). Your doctor may also increase your dose if your child has had an allergic reaction to this medicine.

The maximum adult dose of Trileptal is 300 mg per day. The adult dose should not be increased to 300 mg daily.

The usual recommended starting dose of Trileptal for adults is 20 mg. The dose may be increased to 30 mg or decreased to 5 mg. Your doctor may increase your dose to the maximum recommended dose of 300 mg per day.

If your child's doctor has prescribed Trileptal for you, tell him or her that you are taking this medicine.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor if you are using:

  • liver medicine,
  • any other medicines containing carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Zyban, Tegretol, Tegretol XR).

Side effects are troublesome symptoms or feelings that you may not expect that show up when you are taking a medicine.

      Overview of Trileptal®

      Triptylox® is a non-benzodiazepine anti-seizure medication. It is commonly prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy, which is characterised by a persistent seizure disorder.

      Trileptal® is a generic alternative to Trileptal®, and is available in both the branded and generic formulations.

      How Trileptal® works

      Triptylox® works by inhibiting the reuptake of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as glutamate, in the absence of epilepsy. It can also act on certain chemical messengers (e.g. histamine) that are involved in the regulation of mood, cognition and appetite.

      The drug is effective in treating epilepsy and is approved for use in adults with epilepsy and at least one year of age. It has also been approved for use in children under the age of 6.

      Dosage and direction

      The typical starting dose for Trileptal® is 30mg/day, taken three times a day, starting at 3mg/day.

      It should be noted that Trileptal® can be taken with food, especially in combination with anticonvulsants, which are a class of drugs that are associated with serious and sometimes fatal side effects.

      The dose can also be increased to a maximum of 60mg/day, with maximum efficacy in children 12 years of age or older.

      Side effects

      Common Trileptal® side effects include:

      • Nausea and vomiting
      • Vomiting
      • Headache
      • Dizziness
      • Insomnia
      • Increased sweating
      • Diarrhea
      • Tremors
      • Drowsiness

      Serious Trileptal® side effects include:

      • Seizures
      • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)

      Patients taking Trileptal® should be monitored for symptoms of NMS such as increased sweating, agitation and seizures. Seizure is a serious condition that can cause serious, life-threatening problems. Patients should seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms of NMS, such as rapid heartbeat, shaking, extreme confusion, fast thinking and unusual changes in behaviour or mood.

      Triptylox® is an alternative to Trileptal®, and is available in both the branded and generic forms. Trileptal® is not suitable for those who have not previously taken Trileptal® and who are at increased risk of developing certain side effects.
